Match Report
Craig Ervine, the captain of Zimbabwe, won the toss and didn’t hesitate to choose to bowl first. Therefore, Scotland had to start their batting innings with Christopher McBride and Matthew Cross stepping into the crease. The two openers were careful on the pitch and didn’t play risky shots in the powerplay. As a result, Scotland’s scoreboard was not going fast. They picked up only 35 runs in the first ten overs. However, despite being defensive, the two openers couldn’t make an effective partnership. In the 16.1 over, Zimbabwean fast bowler Tendai Chatara drew the first blood as he picked up Christopher McBride. The opener scored 28 off 45 before leaving the pitch. The other opener, Matthew Cross, contributed 38 runs before losing his wicket to Sean Williams. Brandon McMullen and George Munsey, the following two batters, scored 34 and 31 respectively. But Michael Leask played a vital role in the lower order. He was more aggressive than the previous batters. From 34 balls, Leask scored the highest 48 runs for Scottland. He also hit three fours and two sixes in his innings. Relying on his bat, Scotland ended their innings with 234 runs. Defending the small target, Scotland’s bowlers were on fire. They destroyed the batting lineup of Zimbabwe. Chris Sole picked up Joylord Gumbie in the very first ball of the innings. Chris Sole had a fantastic first spell today against the host. He picked up three of the first four batters of Zimbabwe. Due to his ruthless aggression, Zimbabwe lost four wickets in 37 runs. Zimbabwe’s hopes were almost over when they lost Sikandar Raza. Raza added 34 runs before losing the wicket to Chris Greave. It seemed the host couldn’t score 200 runs. But Ryan Burl played a fantastic innings to handle the disaster. He fought for his life to win the match. From 84 balls, Ryan Burl scored the highest 82 runs for Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, the remaining batters failed to contribute much to win the game. Ultimately, Zimbabwe became all out in 203 runs, resulting in Scotland’s victory by 31 runs. As a result, Zimbabwe have been knocked out and will not play in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.Related reading
