Finally, Manchester United fired Erik Ten Hag, who only renewed his contract last June for the next two years! This decision has been made within 24 hours following Man United’s defeat to West Ham United last night.
Manchester United released a statement on releasing Erik Ten Hag as the head coach of the club. The statement read, “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.”
The club also confirmed that Ruud van Nistelrooy will take care of the club as long as they appoint a new manager. “Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited,” the club stated.
Man United Sacked Ten Hag
Manchester United appointed Erik Ten Hag in April 2022. Under his guidance, Man United won the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. Due to their poor performance in the Premier League last season, Erik Ten Hag was very close to getting sacked. Moreover, Man United were also in talks with other managers, including Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate, and others. But Erik Ten Hag was able to save his job after he defeated Manchester City in the FA Cup final and convinced the management.
However, Erik Ten Hag renewed his contract for two more seasons last July as he earned the trust of the management following the two trophies he won for the club.
Unfortunately, it’s been a disastrous season for Manchester United this time under Ten Hag. Despite spending over 600 million Euro under Erik ten Hag over the years, Manchester United have won only four of their 14 games this season so far. Besides, Man United have earned only 11 points from their first nine league games – their second-lowest points tally in history.
This season has also seen that Man United scored only eight goals so far in the Premier League, with only Crystal Palace and Southampton scoring fewer goals.
It was the defeat last night against West Ham United that prompted Man United to consider sacking Erik Ten Hag. According to reports, the board took this decision within 24 hours following the defeat, and they informed Erik Ten Hag Monday morning that he is not in charge anymore!
“Thanks for everything boss ! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future. Even knowing the last period isn’t been great from all of us. I hope fans can keep with you the good things the manager has done for our club!” Bruno Fernandes wrote in his verified Facebook account.
However, Manchester United have not decided the next manager yet. But they have had contact with former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez.
