The World Champions are flying in every competition. Since winning the Copa America in 2021, they won the Finalissima by defeating the Champions of Europe. A few days later, the Albiceleste won their third World Cup after a long 36-year.

But their hunger continues under Lionel Scaloni. Argentina once again reached the final of the Copa America as they defeated Canada today at Metlife Stadium. Man City’s Julian Alvarez and Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi scored respectively a goal to secure back-to-back Copa America finals for Argentina.

Match Report

Following a difficult match against Ecuador in the quarterfinal, Argentine boss Lionel Scaloni made several changes to the squad to play against Canada. Angel Di Maria and Julian Alvarez came into the starting XI, replacing Nicolas Gonzalez and Lautaro Martinez.

Initially, Canada maintained a compact defense, giving Argentina no space. But it took only 22 minutes for the defending champions to break Canada’s defense and find the net. It was Julian Alvarez who found the back of the net from a defense-breaking pass from De Paul.

Argentina continued to control the match even after the break. The Albiceleste got their second goal when Lionel Messi converted Enzo Fernandez’s powerful shot into a goal with a slight touch. Canada, however, had a few chances in the final 10 minutes but failed to score a goal. In the end, Argentina secured a dominating 2-0 win over Canada to reach back-to-back Copa America finals. Additionally, it is Argentina’s fourth successive finals under Lionel Scaloni.

Reactions

After securing their place in the Copa America final, Argentine boss Lionel Scaloni shared his thoughts on reaching the final. The manager said, “This is something to be proud of. It is very difficult to reach another final. Especially, considering how we have been, with the praise, and the success.”

Scaloni responded when asked whether Argentina has had an easy path, “Everyone thought it was going to be a bed of roses, very easy, but today Canada showed that it is not easy, that it plays well, that it is a difficult rival and everything is multiplied . It is something to be satisfied with, that people enjoy it and to thank the players.”

Angel Di Maria also shared his opinion after the match. He already confirmed that it will be his last tournament in Argentina’s shirt. Therefore, this Copa America is very special for Angel Di Maria.

“I feel I can continue but it is the right time.  I dreamed of it this way and it ended up happening, reaching another final. My teammates already know that there is no turning back, that it’s already decided. They support the decision I made. They’re annoying and all that but it’s already made. There’s only one game left: It’s ending in a dream and it’s what I wanted,”  confirmed Di Maria.

“I think I can go out through the front door. I’ve done everything to go out through that door. I gave everything to go out through that door. I just work. I do the job I have to do. I always try to do my best. I always gave my life for this shirt. There were times when it wasn’t my turn. This time it started to happen to me lately,” Maria burst into tears.
