The Copa Del Rey final saw a dramatic game between two arch-rivals, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Even before the final, a lot happened as Real Madrid demanded to change the match referee, otherwise they would not play the game. However, the board was very strict and stayed with their decision not to change the referee for the final.
Therefore, Real Madrid had no alternative and came to Sevilla to play against FC Barcelona. During the game, Real Madrid was too aggressive against all the decisions of the referee. Yet the Los Blancos could not win the Copa Del Rey despite going into the extra time.
The match started with Barcelona taking control of the midfield. The Catalan side dominated the first half and earned the lead when midfielder Pedri scored a brilliant goal in the 28th minute with the help of Lamine Yamal.
But Real Madrid made a strong comeback in the second half, specifically when Kylian Mbappe came off the bench. The French World Cup winner gave Real Madrid a lifeline when he scored the equalizer with an unbelievable free-kick in the 70th minute. And then guess what?
Madrid turned into the typical Madrid. After the first goal, they highly pressed the opponent and scored another goal within 7 minutes. This time Tchouameni scored the goal with a header to give Real Madrid a 2-1 lead in the 77th minute.
It seemed Real Madrid would kill the game, but the drama was yet to come. In the 85th minute, Lamine Yamal provided a fantastic pass toward Ferran Torres, who defeated Antonio Rudiger and Thibaut Cortoius to score the leveler. This goal gave a massive boost to Barcelona and they were very close to winning the game when they got a penalty kick in the injury time. But a controversial decision came from the VAR, which canceled the penalty kick for Barcelona, leading the game into extra-time.
The extra time was also full of excitement as both sides continued playing aggressive football. But it was Barcelona who became the ultimate winner thanks to Jules Kounde’s brilliant hit outside from the box in the 116th minute. This goal secured the Copa Del Rey trophy for Barcelona and marked the third consecutive win over Real Madrid this season.
In an instant reaction, Barca boss Hansi Flick said, “It was incredible. We are all so proud of this team and it’s a great victory for us.” Meanwhile,
Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti also appreciated his players despite losing the match. Ancelotti said, “It was a good game and we competed well. The first half was tougher, but we were better in the second half. We had the game under control, but they played a ball behind our defence for the second goal and the game got more complicated. The team was good, we were close to winning, but we have to keep fighting. I have nothing to fault the team for.”
