Liverpool had a good chance to get back to the top of the table in the English Premier League, but Chelsea FC denied Liverpool’s chance by defeating them at Stamford Bridge. The hard time continues for Liverpool as they suffered three consecutive defeats across all competitions for the first time under Arne Slot. Following their defeat against Crystal Palace, Liverpool suffered an unexpected defeat in the Champions League against Galatasaray. They were determined to get back on the winning track when they faced Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. But the late goal by Estevao ensured a defeat for Liverpool.
Chelsea started the match with an aggressive attitude and did not wait long to break the deadlock. The Blues took the lead when Moises Caicedo scored a brilliant goal in the 14th minute with the help of Malu Gusto. Conceding the goal, Liverpool became desperate to level the scoreline and had some crucial chances, but failed. Liverpool boss Arne Slot also mentioned it in his post-match press conference. He said, “In the first half, I think we played not our best football but still were able to create three big chances. They’ve only had one and they’ve immediately scored it.”
Chelsea, however, tried hard to control the midfield by keeping more possession. They were able to go to the break with a 1-0 lead. But Liverpool found the equalizer after the break when Cody Gakpo gave a lifeline to the visitors by scoring a crucial goal in the 68th minute. After this goal, it seemed both teams would share the points. But the Blues refused to share any points as Brazilian teenager Estevao scored the winning goal in the injury time of the match.
This win secured all three points for Chelsea which has taken them to 6th in the league table with only three points away from the top four. Meanwhile, Liverpool remain in 2nd with one point away from the top. But Liverpool boss Arne Slot must find a solution after three defeats in a row. “Another disappointing loss. That’s clear. Another game similar to the Palace game, although the game was completely different because the playing style of both teams are completely different,” Arne Slot stated.
Liverpool’s next match will be against Manchester United, who secured a dominating win against Sunderland today.
