It’s been a glorious match for Manchester United at Old Trafford. Since Erik Ten Hag left the club, Van Nistelrooy took charge of Man United as an interim manager, and today’s game was the last for him as the manager. But his final game marked a dominating win over Leicester City at Old Trafford.
Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho secured all three points against Leicester City.
Match Report
Man United boss Van Nistelrooy set up the team formation with 4-2-3-1, where Rasmus Hojlund played in the front with Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Amad Diallo playing in the back.
Leicester boss Steve Cooper played his team in a classic 4-3-3 formation, leaving Jordan Ayew in the center of the attack with Fatawu and Bounanotte.
However, the match started with both teams playing attacking football. But it was Manchester United who broke the deadlock. Captain Bruno Fernandes, who marked his 250th game today for Manchester United, drew the first blood as he scored the opener with a stunning shot outside of the box in the 17th minute.
The captain doubled the lead just before half-time, but since Leicester defender Viktor Kristiansen touched the ball before it went to the net, the goal has been considered an “own goal“. Whatever it is, Man United went to the break with a 2-0 lead at Old Trafford.
Coming from the break, Leicester City tried to overcome. But Man United’s defense was rock solid, thanks to the partnership between Matthjis de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez at the heart of Man United’s defense.
Additionally, Man United got another goal in the final ten minutes. Alejandro Garnacho, coming off the bench in the 57th minute, made it 3-0 with a stunning finish. His powerful shot outside of the box defeated the Foxes goalkeeper and found the back of the net.
“Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans. I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do,” said Bruno Fernandes to BBC Sports after the game.
However, Leicester City failed to score a goal in the remaining minutes. As a result, Man United secured a dominating 3-0 win over Leicester City in Van Nistelrooy’s last game.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy shared his thoughts on his final game as the interim manager. He said, “I really enjoyed it, it’s been a short but amazing period. We are in an uncertain position but we tried to do our jobs and help the club which is important.”
“There are a lot of feelings there, the way the fans supported me and the team always in difficult moments it was a special moment. To close down this block of games with good results and a good connection I can’t thank them enough. We will learn what the further plan is now,” he stated.
