After the US tour as part of the pre-season, Manchester United are back in action. The Wembley is all set to feature the first Manchester Derby of the season as Man City and Man United will fight for the Community Shield glory.
Manchester City had a brilliant season and won their third successive league title. Meanwhile, Manchester United had a nightmare in the previous season yet were able to win the FA Cup. As a result, the two Manchester clubs will meet in the Community Shield final. It is a great opportunity for the two teams to start the season with a trophy.
City boss Pep Guardiola admitted that his side will fight for the trophy tomorrow. He said, “It’s important, it’s a final against [Manchester] United. But part of that is to try to refine ourselves step by step. Our break for most of the players and the young players, how they behave on a bigger stage, [this is] a good game. We will go for it.”
Team News
It’s been a very busy summer for the players as most of them were on international duty whether in Copa America or the UEFA Euro. However, most players have returned after their vacation, yet some will miss due to injuries. City goalkeeper Ederson has picked up an injury during the pre-season game against Chelsea. Therefore, Stefan Ortega is likely to play between the bars tomorrow. The Chelsea game also saw defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand picking up a hamstring injury.
Rodri, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, and John Stones are still out of the squad as they have not returned yet from the vacation. But Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Jeremy Doku, Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, and Matheus Nunes have trained and are available for tomorrow’s final against Manchester United.
As for Manchester United, they have signed two new players. But new signing Leny Yoro picked up a severe injury and will be out of the squad for a few months. There are also doubts about Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. Long-term absentee Luke Shaw made his return in the UEFA Euro. However, his involvement in the Community Shield final is still uncertain. But Joshua Zirkzee could start the match as the replacement for Rasmus Hojlund.
Possible Lineup for Manchester City:
Ortega; Lewis, Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol; Kovacic, De Bruyne; Bobb, Bernardo, Grealish; Haaland
Possible Lineup for Manchester United:
Onana; Dalot, Evans, Martinez, Amass; Casemiro, Mainoo; Amad, Fernandes, Rashford; Zirkzee
Prediction: Man City 2-1 Man United
The defense has been a major problem for Manchester United for the last few seasons. Once again, they have to play without several first-team defenders against Manchester City. It will be a huge advantage for the Citizens.
