Chelsea produced one of their strongest European displays in years as they comfortably defeated FC Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night in their UEFA Champions League League Phase match. The goals came from a Jules Kounde own goal, followed by strikes from Estêvão and Liam Delap. Barcelona’s problems grew even worse when their captain, Ronald Araújo, was sent off in the first half.

Match Report

The night in West London began with a loud, energetic atmosphere, and Chelsea fed off that energy from the opening whistle. Enzo Maresca’s team played with purpose, pressing high and moving the ball quickly. Their intention was clear—they wanted to challenge Barcelona’s defense at every opportunity.

Chelsea actually thought they scored twice early in the game, but both celebrations were cut short. Enzo Fernández had one goal ruled out for handball, and moments later another was canceled after VAR confirmed an offside in the buildup. Even with those setbacks, Chelsea stayed sharp and continued to apply pressure.

Barcelona, trying to settle into their usual possession-based style, struggled to create meaningful chances. Instead, it was Chelsea who earned the breakthrough. In the 27th minute, a fast move down the wing ended with a low cross fired into the box. The ball bounced around before hitting Barcelona defender Jules Kounde and rolling into the net for an unfortunate own goal. Chelsea took a deserved 1-0 lead.

Things became even more difficult for Barcelona just before halftime. Captain Ronald Araújo, already on a yellow card, made a poor challenge that forced the referee to show him a second yellow. The sending-off left Barcelona with 10 players and a huge mountain to climb in the second half.

Chelsea came out after the break full of confidence. Knowing they had the advantage, they moved the ball freely and pushed forward with even more aggression. In the 55th minute, young star Estêvão doubled Chelsea’s lead with a brilliant individual effort. He collected the ball, weaved past two defenders with quick footwork, and smashed a powerful shot into the top corner. The Barcelona goalkeeper had no chance.

With Barcelona down a man and struggling to keep up, Chelsea continued to dominate. The third goal arrived in the 73rd minute. Liam Delap, who had just come on as a substitute, finished calmly after a well-timed pass put him through. The goal was first ruled out, but VAR overturned the decision and confirmed the assist was onside, making it 3-0.

The final score was fully deserved. Chelsea were strong, organized, and confident from start to finish. Their attacking play, high pressure, and solid defense showed how much they have grown under Maresca. This win also strengthens their position in the Champions League standings.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is very happy with the win, but he does not want to carry on celebrating, as they have crucial games ahead. He said, “For me personally it’s a big win, especially because the other team was Barcelona. But nothing changes in terms of what team we are, what we can achieve. For sure tonight’s win is important, but no more than that. It’s over, it’s finished, now we focus on the next one which is difficult again.”
