England boss Gareth Southgate has announced a 26-man squad ahead of Euro 2024. England will start their journey in Euro with the match against Serbia on June 17. Under Gareth Southgate, England has been one of the favorites in recent major tournaments. But Southgate is yet to win a trophy for England.
This time, England have a very good squad mixed with young and experienced players. But there has been a massive shock with the exclusion of players like James Maddison, Jack Grealish, and Harry Maguire.
Who Has Been Dropped?
England manager Gareth Southgate announced a strong squad, but the omission of some players surprised the fans. Man United’s defender Harry Maguire has always performed well in England’s journey and was also a regular starter for England.
But he has suffered a serious injury and missed several matches for Man United as well as England. That is why Southgate doesn’t include him in the squad for Euro 2024.
Gareth Southgate explained, “It was a really difficult call, you know how I feel about Harry, what he’s done for England and for me as a manager. It’s a slightly different case to [Grealish and Maddison], but it’s no easier.
“The decision on Harry [Maguire] is totally about his physical condition and his recovery from the injury. There is no other reason as he is one of our strongest centre-backs.”
“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer. Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted,” said Maguire.
Additionally, the England boss doesn’t also count Jack Grealish and James Maddison. Southgate stated, “Madders and Jack both give us something different, so it was a tough call. Both of those boys are fantastic characters and great teammates.”
“The fact is we’ve got some players who have been playing extremely well all season in the league and we just feel other players have had stronger seasons – particularly in the past six months or so,” Southgate explained.
