The quarterfinals of the UEFA Euro 2024 have been very exciting. The host, Germany, were one of the favorites in this competition but were eliminated by Spain last night.

The second match on Friday night also saw an intense clash between France and Portugal. But both teams failed to find the net in the 90 minutes and extra time, leading the match into the tie-breaker. However, France held their nerve until the last and eliminated Portugal on penalties.

Spain 2-1 Germany

Spain and Germany are two of the most favorites in Euro 2024. They faced off against each other last night in the quarterfinal, where Spain secured the victory after an intense clash.

It took 50 minutes to see a team finding the net. Dani Olmo put Spain ahead with his beautiful finish in the early of the second half. He scored from an assist from the teenager, Lamin Yamal.

Germany were very desperate to return the goal but Spain defended really well. It seemed Spain would win the match in 90 minutes but the drama was yet to come. Florian Wirtz, coming off the bench in the second half, gave a lifeline to Germany with his superb goal just one minute before the half time. As a result, the match went into extra time.

The extra time also saw an intense fight between Spain and Germany. Both teams were struggling to find the net, but Mikel Merino stole all the spotlight when his header defeated Manuel Neuer in the last minutes of extra time. In the end, Spain eliminated Germany and booked their place in the semifinals of the Euro 2024.

France 0-0 Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo announced earlier that this will be his last participation in the UEFA Euro, making it special for Portugal. But his side failed to progress from the quarterfinal as France defeated Portugal on penalties.

France have secured the semifinals without even scoring a goal from open play. Last night, both France and Portugal could not break the deadlock in 90 minutes and extra time.

Therefore, the match went into a tie-breaker, where Joao Felix missed the spot-kick. France took that opportunity and converted all five of their penalties to reach the semifinal.

Portugal boss Roberto Martinez believes that his side deserved to win. He said, “We played well and created many opportunities. I am proud of the players, they showed great character. We had more of the ball and demonstrated lots of personality. We deserved to win and it’s a sad moment, but the players should be extremely proud of themselves. We lost but we lost with pride, always giving everything in every minute, in true Portuguese style.
