Manchester United have tasted their first defeat in the new Premier League campaign. Last night, Tottenham Hotspur welcomed Manchester United at the Spurs Stadium, where the home team sealed a thrilling victory over the Red Devils by a 2-0 margin.

Here have analyzed the match and have pointed out four talking points about this high-voltage game.

Dominating first half for Man United

Manchester United had a fantastic 45 minutes last night against the home team, Tottenham Hotspur. They highly pressed the Spurs in front of thousands of home fans.

Manchester United created many chances in the first half, but they failed to score. Manager Erik Ten Hag said, “It was a very good performance in the first half, except we have to score. We created good chances. We had a really good press on the ball. We had good stretches where we had many chances to score a goal and we deserved a penalty.”

Penalty Rejected

Manchester United could have earned a penalty kick. Cristian Romero blocked Alejandro Garnacho’s shot inside the box, which appeared to be a handball. But it didn’t convince the match referee. However, Erik Ten Hag believes it should be a penalty kick.

“I don’t know why it wasn’t a penalty. It was absolutely a penalty. He (Cristian Romero) changed the direction of the ball and his blocking hand was wide, above. But okay, you have to accept it,” the manager stated.

The lack of scoring

In the entire game, Man United took 22 shots! Unfortunately, the Red Devils couldn’t find the back of the net. Man United had some great opportunities but failed to convert. Bruno Fernandes and Antony hit the post twice!

There is no doubt that the Red Devils are lacking in goals. They scored just one goal in the first two games in the Premier League, and that one goal came from a defender!

Ten Hag also talked about this issue. He said, “I’m not [worried] by the attacking play but by scoring. That is the same issue. We know that. That’s why we signed a striker [Rasmus Hojlund].”

The Spurs are still threatening without Kane

Tottenham’s top goalscorer Harry Kane has left the club and signed for Bayern Munich. It was initially thought that Spurs would struggle to score goals without Harry Kane. But they have done a brilliant job in two games so far in the league. The Spurs have scored four goals in these first two league games.

Moreover, Tottenham Hotspur showed their strength in counter-attack. Against Manchester United, the Spurs were really brilliant in counter-attack.

“To be fair, the lads were great, dominated most of the second half, we had to do some defending, Vic made a couple of excellent saves, ideally you don’t want to see, but it’s brilliant for him because it gives him confidence as well,” said the Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.
