Manchester United were totally destroyed last night at Anfield, conceding seven goals. Liverpool smashed them by a 7-0 margin which registered their biggest-ever victory against Manchester United in competitive football. However, Manchester United arguably played better in the first half, but what went wrong with Manchester United in the second half that they conceded six goals in 45 minutes?

Match Analysis

Manchester United had far better times recently than Liverpool. But the Klopp boys heavily thrashed the Red Devils at Anfield. Let’s focus on both teams’ formation first.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp played his team in his usual 4-3-3. Klopp made up the defensive line with their best CB Virgil Van Dijk pairing up with Ibrahima Konate. Klopp also used two of the defensive midfielders, Henderson and Fabinho, against Manchester United.

On the other hand, Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag set up the team formation with 4-2-3-1, where Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane played as the two CBs.

Although Manchester United played better football, they conceded a goal in the very last moment of the first half. It was thought that Man United could return the goal in the second half as they did many times. But the comeback never happened.

Liverpool brutally destroyed Man United’s defense. Raphael Varane was not in his best form, making several errors that cost goals. Moreover, Casemiro also failed to provide his best performance against Liverpool. Man United heavily failed to maintain the man-marking in the 2nd half. As a result, Mohammad Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Cody Gakpo found enough space, and each of them scored a brace against Manchester United.

After conceding two quick goals in the 2nd half, Manchester United completely lost the tempo. Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag explained some of his players as ‘Unprofessional.’ The manager made several substitutions in the 2nd half, but his plan didn’t work out to avoid this humiliating defeat.

Roy Keane criticized some players

Former Manchester United player Roy Keane heavily criticized some Man United players without mentioning their names. “The thing I’m always wary of with Man United, they won the cup last week, a lot of celebration and of course I’d never begrudge a team of that. But they turned up against West Ham, I’m at the game, and the circus is back in town at Man United,” Roy Kean told Sky Sports.

“I see the players come here today in the second half, having a laugh and a joke. They’re 1-0 down at Anfield, and they’re having laugh and a joke with the Anfield staff, goalkeeping coach. I don’t like to see all that rubbish,” he added.
