Quick Navigation
Argentina, the Champions of the World, are ready to be back in action tonight in the World Cup Qualifier. They are all set to face off against Paraguay away from home, aiming to continue with the momentum they got from their previous dominating win over Bolivia.
Argentina had two difficult games before they smashed Bolivia last month. Their 12-game winning run came to an end when Colombia defeated the Albiceleste in October. Additionally, Argentina dropped points in the following game against Venezuela, ending the game with a 1-1 draw.
However, the World Champions got their spirit back when Lionel Messi returned from injury and scored a hat-trick to secure a 6-0 win against Bolivia.
Now Argentina have a tough challenge ahead when they play against Paraguay tonight away from home. Paraguay are defensively very strong and they have not lost any of their last four games in the Qualifier. During that run, they defeated Brazil and had a goalless draw against Uruguay.
Let’s see how they can play against the World Champions. But the Paraguayan Football Federation has already made controversy ahead of the match. They will implement the “Anti-Messi” law in this match, which means they will not allow any fans to enter the stadium wearing Messi’s shirt!
“No one is allowed to wear jerseys of the Argentina national team, Argentine clubs, or clubs with the names of foreign players. We want the Defensores del Chaco to be painted in the colors of the Albirroja to give the players the support they deserve from the stands, as we are all playing this game in our own way,” said Paraguayan football director Fernando Villasboa.
Meanwhile, Scaloni said, “Obviously, for the Paraguayan footballer, for the fan, they would all like to go with the national team jersey. But Leo is stronger than all that and there will be Argentina jerseys.”
Team News
Argentine boss Lionel Scaloni said that he will play almost a similar squad that played against Bolivia. But Argentine Man United’s defender Lisandro Martinez will miss the match due to his back pain. “We weren’t expecting Lisandro’s condition. Apparently, he only had pain, but when he got here it got worse, they did tests on him and he’s not fit to play,” said Scaloni.
However, Emiliano Martinez is back again following his two-game suspension. So he will replace Geronimo Rulli between the bars. Lionel Messi will lead the attack along with Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez.
As for Paraguay, they will miss the service of Antonio Sanabria due to his injury. However, Miguel Almiron, Julio Enciso, and Ramon Sosa have returned from injury and are waiting to get minutes against Argentina.
Possible Lineup for Paraguay:
R Fernandez; Caceres, G Gomez, Alderete, Balbuena, Alonso; Cubas, D Gomez; Almiron, Sanabria, Enciso
Possible Lineup for Argentina:
E Martinez; Molina, Otamendi, Romero, Tagliafico; De Paul, Enzo, Lo Celso, Mac Allister; Messi, Alvarez
Prediction: Paraguay 1-2 Argentina
Paraguay are defensively doing very well and organized. So they will give Argentina a tough challenge tonight at their home ground. But Argentina have got their momentum back following their fantastic win over Bolivia in their last game. Additionally, Lionel Messi is in a good rhythm and scored a goal in Inter Miami’s last game. With Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez also in great form, Argentina always has a chance to win.
