It was a tough night for English football fans. After a spectacular showing in the group stage, where all six Premier League teams qualified, the knockout rounds have begun with a whimper for many. The Champions League Round of 16 first legs saw four out of the six English representatives suffer costly defeats, throwing their hopes of European glory into serious jeopardy.
The Big Stumbles
The most shocking result of the night came from Madrid, where Manchester City were soundly defeated 3–0 by the giants of Europe, Real Madrid. City struggled to cope with the clinical efficiency and European experience of the Spanish club. They now face a daunting task in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
In Paris, Chelsea suffered a similarly painful 5–2 defeat to a rampant Paris Saint-Germain. A Kylian Mbappé-inspired attack tore through the Chelsea defense, leaving the London club with an incredibly difficult path to the quarter-finals. The story was much the same for Tottenham Hotspur, who were also comprehensively beaten 5–2 away from home, this time against Atlético Madrid. The Spanish side proved to be too hot to handle, showing a ruthlessness that Tottenham couldn’t match. To concede five goals in a single leg is always a disaster, and Tottenham will need a truly monumental comeback at home to turn this tie around.
The final defeat for the English contingent came in Istanbul. Liverpool, a team famed for its European heritage, was frustrated by a resilient Galatasaray. Despite dominating large spells of possession, the Reds failed to break down a determined defense and were caught on the counter-attack, eventually losing 1–0. While a one-goal deficit is far from insurmountable, the nature of the defeat will be a major source of concern for Arne Slot.
Amongst the chaos and disappointment, there was one team that can take some encouragement from their first-leg performance. Newcastle United, in a fixture that many thought would be a huge challenge, battled to a hard-fought 1–1 draw away to Barcelona. A late equaliser from Alexander Isak secured a vital away goal for the Magpies, leaving the tie on a knife-edge ahead of the return leg at a rocking St. James’ Park. This performance from a team that is relatively new to the Champions League was a major boost to their credentials and their fans will be dreaming of a monumental victory in the second leg.
