The football world is reeling from the devastating news that Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car crash in Spain. He was just 28 years old.
The accident occurred in the early hours of July 3, 2025, on the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, in northwestern Spain. Jota was traveling with his younger brother, André Silva, who also died in the crash. According to reports, the Lamborghini Urus they were driving suffered a tire blowout while overtaking, causing the vehicle to leave the road and burst into flames. Both men were killed instantly.
The brothers were returning from a family visit in Portugal and had planned to board a ferry in Santander to return to the UK, where Diogo was expected to rejoin Liverpool FC’s pre-season training. The tragic journey came just days after Jota’s wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. Due to a minor lung procedure, Jota was advised not to fly, prompting the road trip instead.
A Star On and Off the Pitch
Born in Porto, Portugal, in 1996, Diogo Jota began his professional career with Paços de Ferreira before moving to Atlético Madrid, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and ultimately Liverpool FC in 2020. He quickly became a fan favorite at Anfield, known for his energy, technical skill, and goal-scoring instinct.
During his time at Liverpool, Jota made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals, helping the team win both domestic and European titles. He was also an important figure for the Portugal national team, earning 49 caps and scoring 14 goals, most recently helping his country win the 2025 UEFA Nations League.
A Global Outpouring of Grief
Tributes have flooded in from across the football community. Liverpool FC released a statement calling his death “an unimaginable loss.” A statement has been released on behalf of Billy Hogan, John Henry, Tom Werner, and Mike Gordon, the leadership teams at Liverpool Football Club and Fenway Sports Group. The statement reads, “This tragic situation and the reality of it is truly shocking, devastating and has left us numb with grief. We therefore cannot imagine how the immediate and wider family of these remarkable brothers must be feeling. Our thoughts, prayers and support are with them all.”
Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo paid tribute on social media, writing, “Doesn’t make any sense. Just now we were together in the National Team, just now you were married. To your family, to your wife and children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. R.I.P. Diogo and Andre We will all miss you.”
