Girona FC have become one of the most surprising teams in La Liga this season. They got promoted to La Liga only seven years ago but has now secured their place in the top four, which will see them playing in the UEFA Champions League for the very first time in their history.

Last night, Girona welcomed FC Barcelona at Montilivi Stadium, where they humiliated the Catalan side by securing a dominating 4-2 win. This stunning win also moved them one point ahead of Barcelona, standing in 2nd. Moreover, Barca’s defeat last night also secured the title for Real Madrid, as they have become the Champions with four games left to play in this competition.

Match Report

At Montilivi, both teams showed their hunger for all three points and were aggressive from the start. But it was Barcelona who broke the deadlock when defender Andreas Christensen found the back of the net in just two minutes with a stunning volley! However, the home team did not waste time and took only two minutes to equalize at Montilivi. Girona striker Artem Dovbyk leveled the scoreline, as he converted Martin’s cross into a goal with a powerful header.

After that, the two teams tried their best to go ahead and created tons of chances, but they were struggling to find the net. However, Barcelona got a great opportunity just before the break when Girona defender Miguel fouled Lamin Yamal inside the box, which earned a spot kick for Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake. As a result, Barcelona went to the break with a 2-1 lead over the home side.

Coming back from the break, Girona just outplayed Barcelona in every possible way. Although Barcelone had some chances early in the second half, they couldn’t convert them.

But the home team was very clinical in the final third and rarely missed chances. They leveled the scoreline once again when striker Portu, who came off the bench in the 65th minute, found the back of the net in his first touch!

Portu made a huge impact on the field, as he set up another goal following his strike. Girona took the lead two minutes later when Miguel Gutierrez netted the ball with the help of Portu!

However, Barcelona couldn’t fight back in the remaining minutes as Girona held their dominance until the end. Additionally, Portu hammered the last nail to Barca’s coffin when he completed his brace in the 74th minute with a brilliant volley! In the end, Girona secured a thrilling 4-2 win over Barcelona and moved to the 2nd place in the league table.

We Were The Better Side – Xavi

Although Barcelona lost the match, manager Xavi said they were the better side at Montilivi! “We were the better side and we were brilliant for an hour. At half time I was really happy. A lack of finishing has killed us, the story of the season,” said Xavi Hernandez in the post-match reaction.

He added, “We made some flagrant errors. We gifted the game. We have to improve, above all mentally, because every time we find it hard to pick ourselves up.”
