Match Report
It has been a very difficult season for Chelsea, and they are nowhere near the top four. Securing the top four has become more difficult for the Blues, but they are pushing hard to improve their standing.
Last night, Chelsea welcomed Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino played his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Besides, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe set up his team formation with an aggressive 4-3-3, deploying Alexander Isak in the center of the frontline along with Antony Gordon and Miguel Almiron.
However, the match started with Chelsea taking an early lead as Nicolas Jackson beautifully netted the ball in just 6 minutes of the game. Pochettino also praised Nicolas Jackson’s performance against Newcastle United. “Of course, he [Jackson] is improving. We need to understand the players when they are young and arrive from outside of England. They need time to learn the Premier League,” Pochettino said in the post-match reaction.
Anyway, Newcastle United fought very hard to find the equalizer, and it took 43 minutes for them to score the leveler. Alexander Isak scored a brilliant goal from the assist of Bruno Guimaraes in the 43rd minute to give the Magpies a lifeline.
But the home team took control of the match after the break when Cole Palmer scored outside from the box in the 57th minute. Cole Palmer has been a decisive factor for Chelsea this season, and Pochettino didn’t forget to talk about him. “He is doing well. He arrived on the last day of the transfer window but it was easy for him to adapt to the team and the demands of the coaching staff. I think he is showing his quality and how he can link the game,” said Pochettino.
Additionally, Chelsea literally killed the game when Mykhailo Mudryk showed his dribbling skill to find the back of the net in the 76th minute to make the scoreline 3-1.
Jackob Murphy, however, scored a late goal for the Magpies, which seemed the visitors could make a comeback. But Chelsea were very careful in the remaining minutes and didn’t concede any further goal. In the end, the Blues secured a 3-2 win over Newcastle United and got closer to the top ten.
