It’s been a massive blow for Liverpool in the title race. They had a great chance to go to the top of the point table, but Everton surprised the Klopp boys in the Merseyside Derby at the Goodison Park.
Liverpool lost this crucial match by a 2-0 margin and have gone three points behind the table topper, Arsenal. With only four games left to play for the All-Reds, it will be very difficult for them to win the league title. Defending Champions Man City are just one point behind Liverpool, playing two games less than the Klopp boys. Therefore, the chances are very high that Man City would go for the league title along with Arsenal. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s title hope is almost over following their shocking defeat against Everton last night.
Match Report
Everton welcomed Liverpool last night at Goodison Park, where Liverpool needed all three points to stay alive in the title race. But the home team was very aggressive from the start and had some crucial chances. Their biggest chance came in just seven minutes of the match when Calvert Lewin won a penalty kick for the Toffees. Unfortunately, this penalty was not awarded after the VAR check, as Calvert Lewin was in offside!
However, Liverpool controlled the midfield and tried to keep the home team under pressure. Liverpool had tons of chances but failed to break Everton’s defense at Goodison Park. Moreover, the Toffees stunned the visitors when Jarrad Branthwaite found the back of the net in the 27th minute. Eventually, the first half ended in a 1-0 lead to Everton as Liverpool couldn’t find the net in the remaining minutes.
After the break, Liverpool suffered a lot from Everton’s set pieces. Dominic Calvert Lewin doubled their lead when he scored a brilliant goal with a powerful header at the start of the second half.
“I think everybody who is with Everton saw that goal already 20 times or something like that, that’s their routine. Everybody knows they put the ball there. In the end, the player is anyway completely free. I didn’t see it back, but I’m pretty sure we could have defended that better,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp in the post-match press conference.
Despite their best effort, Liverpool failed to score a goal in the remaining minutes. In the end, Everton won the Merseyside Derby by a 2-0 margin at Goodison Park, which left Liverpool out of the title race in the Premier League.
Is Liverpool Out of the Title Race?
Jurgen Klopp was asked whether they are out of the league title. Klopp replied, “I understand it, it’s part of the business, but I don’t know why I have to answer this question – obviously you can read the table. So, should I say now we are still fully in? We need a crisis at [Manchester] City and Arsenal, and need to win football games, because if they start now losing all the games and we do what we did tonight, nothing changed. And we are not safe in the Champions League as well so we should just play better football.“
