Athletic Club welcomed Girona FC last night at San Memes, aiming to get closer to the top four. Athletic boss Ernesto Valverde and Girona boss Salva played their team in the same 4-2-3-1 formation.
However, the match started with the home team taking an early lead at San Memes. Athletic Club scored in just two minutes of the game when Alejandro Berenguer found the back of the net.
Following that, Girona FC created a lot of chances to find the equalizer. But the home side showed their defensive solidity in the first half and didn’t concede any goals, resulting in Athletic Club going to the break with a one-goal lead.
Coming back from the break, Girona seemed very determined to win the match. It took only five minutes in the second half for Girona to find the lever as Viktor Tsyhankov scored a brilliant goal in the 49th minute with the help of Iván Martín.
However, the home side re-established their lead within a few minutes. Alejandro Berenguer, the scorer of the first goal, completed his brace as he scored again in the 56th minute. This goal was a huge boost for Athletic Club, leading them to score the third one at San Memes within a short time. The third goal came from Inaki Williams, which was the result of Girona’s defensive error. In the 60th minute, Inaki Williams stole the ball from Girona’s defender and found the back of the net.
However, the drama started when Eric Garcia scored Girona’s 2nd goal with a beautiful header in the 75th minute. It seemed Girona could equalize in the remaining minutes. The chance, however, came in the injury time for Girona, but Athletic Club’s defender Miguel Gutiérrez made a goalless clearance to keep the lead alive!
In the end, Athletic Club secured all three points against Girona at San Memes, which has moved them to the 5th place in the league table. Meanwhile, Girona are now six points behind the table topper Real Madrid.
