The Palaszczuk Government has come up with stricter and tougher laws for casino operators.

Shannon Fentiman, the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General said the strong reforms in the Casino Control and other Legislation Amendment Bill of 2022 ensure that casinos that are operating transparently and lawfully take responsibility for reducing gambling harm.

Minster Fentiman stated that these laws are made to improve the integrity of gambling and deter dishonest, illegal, and unethical behavior in the casinos of Queensland.

Many new laws had been recommended by the Honourable Robert Gotterson AO under this review included in The Star Entertainment Group that had been received on 30th September.

The Attorney said that considering the extremely concerning and serious findings of the Gotterson Review, swift actions have been taken by the Government to prioritize critical reforms, which address primal matters in the report of Mr. Gotterson.

To take the necessary action, the new laws are going to give a special manager who will be appointed to direct and monitor operations to report back to the Government. With these reforms, the Government will not have to compensate casino operators to introduce stronger regulatory laws. Additionally, the Government will now be able to issue a penalty of up to $100 million to the operators as a disciplinary measure.

According to the Attorney, these reforms must be in place soon to prepare for the probable outcome of the show cause process relevant to The Star Entertainment Group.

She said that an announcement had been made last week that the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation is going to issue a show cause notice to The Star Entertainment Group. The reforms are going to offer the Government more options for responding to the prospective results of that process.

The reforms are going to pave the way to transition to safe cashless gaming that will address money laundering concerns.
