The Madrid Derby was its best! Only a week ago, Real Madrid knocked Atletico Madrid out of the Spanish Super Cup, and last night, Atletico Madrid took that revenge in the Copa Del Rey. Atletico Madrid welcomed Real Madrid at Civitas Metropolitano Stadium to play the round of 16 tie in the Copa Del Rey, where the Simeone boys secured a thrilling victory by a 4-2 margin against the Los Blancos and advanced to the quarterfinal.

Match Report

Atletico Madrid were desperate to bounce back when they welcomed Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey. Atletico boss Diego Simeone set up an aggressive formation of 3-5-2 against Real Madrid, using three CBs with two wing-backs. On the other hand, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti played his team in a 4-3-1-2 formation, where Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo led Madrid’s attack.

However, Real Madrid were very aggressive despite being the visiting team. They tried to get an early lead and could have scored a goal in just ten minutes. But Jude Bellingham’s powerful shot hit the bar in the 10th minute. The Los Blancos also had chances to go ahead, but Jan Oblak made some heroic saves, including double saves in the 20th minute, to keep the scoreline 0-0.

It seemed the first half could end in a goalless draw, but Samuel Lino gave Atletico Madrid a long-awaited lead as he scored in the 39th minute with a beautiful finish. However, Real Madrid didn’t wait much to get the equalizer, but the credit was to Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Oblak punched the ball into his own net, giving Real Madrid the leveler in the injury time of the first half.

Coming from the break, the home team tried to play aggressive football, especially their wing-backs were very effective in the second half. As a result, Atletico Madrid took the lead again early in the second half. This time, Alvaro Morata found the net in the 57th minute to make the scoreline 2-1.

Real Madrid are very popular for scoring in the dying moment, and they did exactly the same last night against Atletico Madrid. When Atletico seemed to be the winner, Real Madrid got the equalizer as Joselu scored for the Los Blancos in the 82nd minute, taking the match into extra-time.

The Simeone boys did a fantastic job in the extra-time, defending for their lives. But it was Antoine Griezmann who stole the show by scoring a brilliant goal in the 100th minute. It was a solo goal by Griezmann as he dribbled past three players from Real Madrid and defeated Andriy Lunin to find the net.

After that, Real Madrid tried their best to score another one, but Atletico Madrid defended with their lives and didn’t concede any goal in the remaining minutes. As a result, Real Madrid were eliminated from the round of 16, and Atletico Madrid secured their place in the quarterfinal of the Copa Del Rey.
