As Manchester United are out of the UEFA Champions League and failed to secure their place in the UEFA Europa League, their only chance to get a trophy is from the FA Cup. Last night, the Red Devils traveled to Rodney Parade to play the 4th Round of the FA Cup against Newport County, a team from League Two.

However, Manchester United won the match by a 4-2 margin and advanced to the next round. Several players returned from the injury in this match, including Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw.

Match Report

At Rodney Parade, Newport County welcomed Man United to play the 4th round tie in the FA Cup. Man United boss Erik Ten Hag set up the team formation with 4-2-3-1 in this match. As Andre Onana is on international duty, the manager deployed Altay Bayındır between the posts. Likewise, Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro started for the first time since returning from injury.

Although Man United were the visitors, they gave no chance to the home side and drew the first blood within ten minutes. Captain Bruno Fernandes put Man United ahead in the match when he scored in the 7th minute with an assist from Anthony.

After that, Manchester United took only six minutes to double their lead. This time, teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo scored his first-ever goal for Man United in the 13th minute.

The way Man United started the game, it seemed they would smash the home team at Rodney Parade. But Newport County made a dramatic comeback, returning two goals within a short time. The home side got their first goal just before half-time when Bryn Morris netted the ball in the 36th minute.

Newport County stunned Manchester United after coming back from the break. They didn’t take much time to find the equalizer in the second half, as Will Evans scored a brilliant goal in just two minutes of the second half.

In Man Unitd’s recent games, they conceded many goals despite taking the lead. As a result, Man United’s fans were tensed at that point, thinking Newport would win the game.

However, The Red Devils showed a great response and got the lead again. This time, Brazil international Anthony found the net in the 68th minute, the first goal of the season for him. After that, the home side couldn’t fight back and conceded another goal in the injury time, as Rasmus Hojlund scored in the 90+4th minute. In the end, Manchester United won the match by a 4-2 margin and advanced to the next round.

We Showed Character and Resilience – Ten Hag

Man United boss Erik Ten Hag shared his thoughts on winning the match. He criticized his team for conceding two goals but was pleased to win the match.

In the post-match press conference, Ten Hag said, “I think job done. In the first 25 minutes, on our side, we were very good and controlled the game. We had the possession and were really controlling it very good. We scored two very good goals and were creating one, two or three more, and it could have been 3-0 or 4-0. Out of nothing, actually, they scored a goal. Then, straight after half-time, they scored another goal and I have to criticise the team for that. Then we started all over and showed character and resilience, fought back and got the third and fourth goal.”
