Finally, Manchester United won a silverware after a long time. Last night, the Red Devils ended their six years trophy drought as they defeated Newcastle United to win the Carabao Cup.

The last trophy Manchester United won was in 2017 when they lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy under their former boss Jose Mourinho. After that, Manchester United failed to win a single trophy till last night. Ole Gunner Soljkaer was really close to winning silverware during his tenure at the club, but he failed to do so. However, Erik Ten Hag started his new era with Carabao Cup, the first trophy in his first season at Man United.

However, Newcastle United dominated the first 20 minutes at Wembley Stadium as they were desperate to win Carabao Cup to get their first silverware in 54 years. The Magpies highly pressed Manchester United during the first half. But Manchester United didn’t concede a goal in those minutes thanks to Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Casemiro, and David De Gea. Manchester United’s defense line was rock solid at Wembley. It was almost impossible for Newcastle United to score, breaking Manchester United’s defense.

Eventually, the Ten Hag boys took control of the match, with Casemiro finding the net with a powerful header. In the 33rd minute, Casemiro scored that goal from Shaw’s free-kick. Six minutes later, Man United doubled their lead as Marcus Rashford scored with the help of Wout Weghorst.

Both sides played aggressive football in the second half. But they couldn’t score more in the 2nd half. Bruno Fernandes could have netted one in the very last moment. But the Newcastle goalkeeper denied him. At the end of the day, Manchester United won the match and lifted the trophy after a long six-year wait.

Reaction

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag is very pleased to win the first trophy in his first season at Man United. He said, “It was definitely the right spirit, there is very good spirit in the team. We act as a team and fight for everything.”

Ten Hag also talked about the mentality of senior players. He stated, “I said before the game – Rapha Varane, Casemiro, David De Gea. They know how to win trophies. You need such lads on the pitch to point the team, coach the team, organise the team. Not only from a tactical perspective but also, especially, the mental perspective. It’s so important, the winning attitude. They have to bring it in the dressing room and bring it to the team. In difficult situations, they have to handle it and that’s what they did again.”
